The White House Office of Management and Budget ordered a temporary pause on all new federal grants and loans yesterday, January 27, 2025.
A document obtained by the Washington Post indicates the pause affects programs including, but not limited to, financial assistance for foreign aid, non-governmental organizations, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, gender-related programs, and projects related to the Green New Deal.
As previously noted regarding game funding, governments worldwide have significantly increased financial support to corporations. The United States, in particular, has distributed billions in grants and loans. These funds often come with stipulations, such as those outlined in the memo (e.g., restrictions on funding for NGOs, DEI initiatives, etc.).
This funding has significantly supported the video game industry over the past four to five years.
While the pause is expected to be lifted eventually, the areas where funding is directed may change.
